occasionally, continue to cook until fragrant and browned. \u00a0The butter will foam up a bit and little bits of browned butter will sit at the bottom of the pan when done. \u00a0Remove from heat and transfer to a heat-safe container. \u00a0Chill until the consistency of softened butter.<\/li>\n<li id=\"instruction-step-2\">Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees. \u00a0Grease and flour three 8-inch cake pans and set aside.<\/li>\n<li id=\"instruction-step-3\">Sift together the flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and cloves. \u00a0Set aside.<\/li>\n<li id=\"instruction-step-4\">Place browned butter in the bowl of an electric mixer. \u00a0Using the paddle attachment, mix until smooth. \u00a0Add in the granulated sugar and brown sugar. \u00a0Increase speed to medium-high. \u00a0Continue to mix for about 3-5 minutes. \u00a0Stop the mixer and scrape down the sides and bottom of the bowl.<\/li>\n<li id=\"instruction-step-5\">With the mixer on medium-low, add in the eggs, one at a time. \u00a0Add in vanilla. \u00a0Once incorporated, stop the mixer and scrape down the bowl.<\/li>\n<li id=\"instruction-step-6\">With the mixer on low, add in the flour mixture and milk in three alternating additions &#8211; starting and ending with the flour mixture. \u00a0Mix on medium-low for now more than 30 seconds or until combined.<\/li>\n<li id=\"instruction-step-7\">Evenly distribute the batter between the three pans. \u00a0Bake for about 23-25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes comes out clean or with few crumbs. \u00a0Cool on a wire rack for 10-15 minutes before removing the cakes from their pans.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Make the Eggnog Buttercream Filling:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li id=\"instruction-step-8\">Place the cream cheese and butter in the bowl of an electric mixer. \u00a0Mix until smooth. \u00a0With the mixer on low, gradually add in the remaining ingredients until incorporated. \u00a0Turn up the mixer to medium-high and mix until light and fluffy.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Make the Vanilla Swiss Meringue Buttercream:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li id=\"instruction-step-9\">Place the egg whites and sugar in the bowl of an electric mixer. \u00a0Whisk to combine. \u00a0Fill a medium saucepan with a few inches of water and place over medium heat. \u00a0Place the mixing bowl on top of the saucepan to create a double-boiler. \u00a0Whisking intermittently, heat the egg white mixture until 160 degrees on a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2c7NNo1\" target=\"blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">candy thermometer<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li id=\"instruction-step-10\">Once hot, transfer the mixing bowl back to the electric mixer. \u00a0Using the whisk attachment, whip the egg white mixture on high for 8 to 10 minutes until the outside of the mixing bowl returns to room temperature and the egg whites are\u00a0fluffy, glossy and hold a stiff peak. \u00a0Stop the mixer and swap out the whisk for the paddle attachment.<\/li>\n<li id=\"instruction-step-11\">With the mixer on low, add in the remaining ingredients. \u00a0Once incorporated, whip on medium until silky and smooth, about 3 to 5 minutes. The buttercream may look like it\u2019s curdled or soupy. Keep mixing until it is completely smooth.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Assemble the Cake:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li id=\"instruction-step-12\">Once the cakes are cooled, trim the tops as needed to level using a large serrated knife. Place the bottom layer of cake on a cake board or serving dish. Spread on about 1 cup of eggnog buttercream with an offset spatula. Top with the next layer of cake and repeat. Crumb coat and frost the cake with the vanilla buttercream. Create swirls using the rounded tip of an offset spatula while spinning the cake. Garnish with toffee bits, if desired.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\n\n\t<div class=\"tasty-recipes-notes\">\n\t\t<h3 data-tasty-recipes-customization=\"h3-color.color h3-transform.text-transform\">Notes<\/h3>\n\t\t<div class=\"tasty-recipes-notes-body\" data-tasty-recipes-customization=\"body-color.color\">\n\t\t\t<ul>\n<li>Best served at room temperature so that the buttercream is silky smooth.<\/li>\n<li>If serving the day that it is made, cake may be kept at room temperature.
