How to Paint a Watercolor Cake! A peek into the creative process using edible paints and lemon extract with our contributor, Allison Kelleher<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lately, I\u2019ve been playing around with \u2018watercolor\u2019 painting \u2013 the traditional technique \u2013 very much like you would do on paper \u2013 but without paper or water!\u00a0 When I came across this lovely Rex Ray<\/a> painting, I knew it would be the perfect inspiration.\u00a0 The colors are so fresh and pretty, and they blend together beautifully.<\/p>\n

It took a little trial and error to figure out how to create a \u2018watercolor painting\u2019 on fondant \u2013 in the end, I realized that the key to the process is drying time<\/i> \u2013 and lots of it!<\/p>\n

\"How<\/p>\n

To start off, I rolled out a pretty thin piece of fondant and let it sit out a bit.\u00a0 I mixed lemon extract<\/a><\/strong> with\u00a0edible petal dust<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0in shades of fuchsia, two tones of yellow, bright green and a subdued lavender; then I painted.\u00a0 When you use a lot of lemon extract, you get all sorts of interesting shapes and colors.\u00a0 But it can take several hours<\/i> to dry. While I chose to use lemon extract, any clear extract or clear alcohol like vodka will work as well.<\/p>\n

\"How<\/p>\n

When the fondant is easy enough to handle, cut into shapes and apply to your cake.\u00a0 Design-wise, I used a free-form, organic aesthetic but then contained it within the stripes.<\/p>\n

I really enjoyed the process of painting \u2013 it was fun (and different) for me. It was a nice change from my more structured Modern Mosaic Cakes<\/a><\/strong>. With no rules, no right or wrong way to do it, there’s\u00a0no need to be precise! I hope you give this watercolor technique\u00a0a try.<\/p>\n
